Back to menu During the Vedic period of ancient India (c. 1500–600 BCE), the main tribes were the Indo-Aryan peoples, including the Bharatas, Purus, Yadu, Turvasu, and Druhyu, often referred to collectively as the Pancha Janas (Five Tribes). The Puru clan, particularly the Bharatas, were prominent figures in the Rigveda, eventually forming the Kuru kingdom. Other notable groups mentioned in Vedic texts include the Anu, Alinas, Bhalanas, Matsya, and Parsu.
