Mehergarh 7000 bc

 Back

Ten thousand years ago, the Indian subcontinent was inhabited by hunter-gatherer communities, but a significant shift began with the dawn of agriculture, around 7,000-9,000 BCE, including the domestication of wheat, goats, and cattle. This period predates the established Indus Valley Civilization (c. 2500-1900 BCE) but is associated with the origins of settled life and was significantly impacted by Meltwater Pulse 1B (c. 10,900 to 9,500 years ago), which caused dramatic sea level rise. Evidence of human presence includes ancient petroglyphs found in the Konkan region, which may represent a previously unknown hunter-gatherer civilization, as well as early agricultural settlements like Mehrgarh.
